You deposit a lump sum with a bank or building society for an agreed term. The interest rate is fixed for that period, so you know in advance what you'll earn. In return, access is usually restricted until maturity, and further deposits are often not allowed after the funding window closes.
Despite the similar name, these are different. A fixed-rate savings bond is a deposit account. An investment or corporate bond is a debt investment in an issuer — returns depend on the issuer's ability to pay, values can fall, and capital is at risk. FSCS deposit protection does not apply automatically to investment bonds.
Maturity is the date your term ends. Providers usually contact you beforehand with options: withdraw, move to a new fixed term, or transfer to an easy-access account — often at a lower variable rate if you don't act. Note your maturity date in advance.
Gross is the contractual rate paid before tax. AER (Annual Equivalent Rate) shows what you'd earn over a year if interest were compounded and paid annually, making products with different payment frequencies easier to compare. Interest may count towards your Personal Savings Allowance.
Many fixed-term accounts don't permit early access at all. Some allow it subject to a penalty, typically a number of days' interest. Consider an emergency fund elsewhere before locking money away.
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme protects eligible deposits with UK-authorised banks and building societies, currently up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. Brands sharing one banking licence share one limit. Temporary high balances may have additional protection for a limited period.
For investment products, check who the issuer is, whether the promotion has been approved by an FCA-authorised firm, the issuer's financial position, how and when you're repaid, whether the investment is secured, how easily you can exit, and what happens if the issuer fails. If unsure, consider regulated financial advice.
